Artist Statement

As a woman of color and an immigrant, women's status in this country whether in voting rights, equality at home, at work, equal pay at work, opportunity to pursue higher education, the right to reproductive rights, right to equality concerns me a lot. Our Time is Now has a darker portrayal of the same theme based on the television series, The Handmaid’s Tale which left a chilling feeling at the bottom of my heart. This is a stark portrayal of faceless women in captivity, without basic rights, mere vessels for producing babies. The colors of black & red emphasizes the bleakness, drawing attention to women's freedom, rights, dignity & identity. The political climate is stark and this painting calls out not only to all women and girls, but to all men - fathers, husbands, friends and male relatives to take action, and to stand up for women's rights and freedoms.
