Artist Statement

Voice of the Forest, is the central sculpture in my eco installation, Sanctuary. I collected the curving charred wood forms from the Santa Cruz mountains—remnants from the CZU wildfire that consumed 86,500 acres and 911 homes in 2020. These forms suggest a family group standing beneath an intricately crafted copper wire disk alluding to holistic thinking. Copper is an element essential to the health of all life forms. A handmade basket filled with black rice highlights our dependence on the natural world, completing the tableau. The forest speaks to us.
